Mark Thaxter and Anna Turvey powered round the V236/1 to secure deserved victories in the Drighlington BC 25-mile time trial on Saturday afternoon.

Thaxter, 44 and from near Huddersfield, clocked 50.48 to take the win in the men’s race by 23 seconds from Michael Ellerton (Team Swift), while the men’s podium was completed by North Lancs RC’s Mark Haydock who was almost a minute further off the pace.

Turvey’s win in the women’s event was even more convincing, being a new course record and also believed to be a new Irish national record.

Her time of 53.40 was almost four minutes quicker than second-placed Jessica Bacon (York Cycleworks) who clocked 57.29, while Lynn Hanson (Seacroft Wheelers) was third, another 4-10 off the pace.

It is another win in a growing list of 2016 victories for 36-year-old Turvey, who also won the Newcastle Cheviot CC 25, the Stockton Wheelers 25 and the North Tyneside Riders 10.

It was Thaxter’s first win of the season, following second in the Ravensthorpe 10 last month and joint second in the Yorkshire CF 25 on the same course, which yesterday was bathed in warn sun and only had a slight breeze.

“It was quicker for the Drighlington yesterday,” said Thaxter. “My power was about the same but conditions were better. I quite enjoy that course as you do two laps which gives you something to think about.

“It was quite nice to beat Michael Ellerton as he’s a good rider, and especially good to get my first win.

“I prefer 25s to 10s as I can keep the power down quite well and just keep going. I don’t think I train hard enough for 10s – 25 pace is more my thing!”
