Both the men’s and women’s course records were smashed during the Wigmore CC 25 event. Jonathan Parker took almost a minute off the time previously held by Kevin Tye, which had stood at 51.41.

In the women’s event, Bronwyn Ewing took over a minute off the time of 1:00.46 which had been set by Debbie Coyle, and in doing so became the first woman to officially record under the hour on the Q25/8 course.

Elliott Porter of Neon Velo was in second place in the men’s race, himself only missing out on Tye’s record by nine seconds in far from ideal conditions. Tye, now a veteran riding for VeloRefined Aerosmiths, finished third in 52.51 and also took the veteran’s prize.

Ewing was a comfortable winner in the women’s category with her time of 59.39 easily beating previous record holder Debbie Coyle (VC Elan - Harry Perry Cycles) who clocked a time of 1:02.44 this time out. Louise Mason (Medway Velo Club) was third in 1:05.05.

Speaking after breaking the record, Ewing said: “Yeah, I was really chuffed with the result, it’s a difficult course – not very kind! It was freezing cold but not wet which I was pleased about because I hate the rain.

“I was expecting to get a good time, I’ve been training really hard and I’m fighting fit. I’ve got a 12-hour trial in June, something really mad, so I’ve been training for that.

“I have done a 24-hour before too. I just like riding my bike, getting out there and riding for hours and hours. I love it! I’ll definitely be back next year to try and break the record again. On a good day, I think a 58 is possible.  Definitely if it’s warmer.”

Fastest junior on the day was Dan Martin (Thanet RC) in 57.44. Top juvenile was Theo Tadros (InGear QuickVit Trainsharp RT) in 1:04.13 and the team award went to Velorefined Allstars trio of Mark Hill, Andy Meilak and Kevin Tye with a combined time of 2:48.36.
