A cool, dry but breezy afternoon greeted the competitors in the Cardiff Ajax CC 10 mile time trial held on the A467 between Abercarn and Risca. The course comprises a mixture of single and dual carriageway and is slightly downhill to the turn with a leg-sapping drag about a mile and a half from the finish. With the promise of a £100 donation to Qhubeka from the promoting club if the course record was broken, all eyes were on Carmarthen's Scott Davies, Team Dimension Data, who was last man off. First man off, Ian Wallis of Cardiff Ajax and riding his first open time trial, recorded a very respectable 24:48 but the honours of first man home fell to Dave Medhurst, also Cardiff Ajax, stopping the watch at 21:16 and which indicated some fast times were possible on this challenging course. Before the fast men set off, there was fierce competition for the under 18 and the women's awards, with Evan Richards, Giant CC Halo Films, and Jasmine Boyer, Bynea CC, respectively proving victorious. The promise of fast times continued when Richard Wilder, Sportzmad, finished with 21:08, good enough to ensure he won the veteran's prize. Wilder continued to lead until Cwmcarn Paragon's Chris Smith put his local knowledge to good use to clock 20:36. But Smith's lead was short lived with last year's winner Sam Tillett, Wales Racing Academy, recording 20:07. Attention now shifted to local fast man Ioan Smallwood of the promoting club. Smallwood has been training hard over the winter and his remarkable time of 19:30 was only 23 seconds away from Sam Harrison's course record. This left Scott Davies as the only competitor likely to topple to Smallwood and he did just that in 19:23, but missing out on the course record as a result of losing a few seconds due to traffic. The organiser would like to thank members and friends of Cardiff Ajax for helping out on the day and the timekeepers for their continued support in this event. The refreshment stand raised £28.16 for the air ambulance.
