Long distance specialists come to the fore this weekend as the National 24-Hour Championship is staged by Mersey Roads Club near Farndon in Cheshire.

Starting at lunchtime on Saturday and going through the night, the event has seen a large entry of experienced riders sign up.

All of last year’s top ten men are back to ride again, with reigning champion Andy Jackson (AeroCoach) the last man off. Three-time champion Michael Broadwith (Arctic Aircon RT) was third last year, and will be looking to claim another title, while last 2018 runner-up Nick Clarke (Arctic Aircon RT) also rides.

Josh Griffiths

In the women’s line-up 2018 champ Crystal Spearman (Born to Bike) returns to defend, while her team-mate and multiple national champion Lynne Biddulph also rides. Other women to watch for include Jackie Field (CC Ashwell) and Christina Murray (Army Cycling).

Elsewhere Bristol South CC are holding a 50-mile time trial on Sunday with Josh Griffiths (Bikestrong KTM) the last man off, and in Cambridgeshire Shaftesbury CC are putting on a similar distance event with a strong field including Chris Bartley (AS Test Team), Paul Hart (Southend Wheelers), Alice Lethbridge and Vicky Gill (both DRAG2ZERO).

Southern Counties CU stage a 100-mile event near Dial Post in West Sussex on Sunday, while Southdown Velo are hosting a 50-mile event near Fontwell.

Marcin Bialoblocki

In County Durham it’s the Barnesbury CC 25 near Three Horse Shoes, while in South Wales Realteam.co.uk are staging a 25-mile event on the fast course near Rhigos, with many riders targeting personal best times.

Marcin Bialoblocki (NOPINZ) rides in Rhigos as he continues his preparation for the National 25-Mile Championship, and if conditions are right he could challenge his own national competition record on 42-58.

On Saturday, events include Rossington Wheelers 10 at Hatfield Woodhouse in South Yorkshire, as well as 50-mile events being laid on by Yorkshire Cycling Federation near Boroughbridge and Congleton CC near Cranage in Cheshire.

Over shorter distances, Islington CC are hosting a 10-mile time trial near Brogborough in Bedfordshire, while in Norfolk it’s the Anglia Velo 10 and in Lancashire Chorley CC are similarly hosting a ten mile event near Garstang.

Full startsheets from these and other events are available on the CTT website. Remember to keep checking back to the CTT website over the weekend for reports and results.
